BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — Local law enforcement says West Tennessee farmers are the target of criminals because they typically spend countless hours working their field. Investigators in Haywood County are currently searching for suspects in two incidents that happened in less than 24 hours where farm tools and chemicals were stolen from parked trucks and trailers. Mark Roberts like many farmers, says that when the weather permits, he works at least 12 hours a day. “We’re out farming and are full blast now…away from our shops trying to get crops in,” Roberts said. Haywood County officials say they believe thieves could be targeting farmers because they’re forced to leave equipment unattended for long periods of time while they work. “The chemicals and equipment we have are so expensive and it’s easy for them to get rid of it,” Berkley Cobb, a farmer said. He added that farmers usually have so much equipment and tons of chemicals lying around while they’re working that it’s hard to watch it all, but Roberts said now he will be taking more precautions. No arrests have been made in either incident. Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department.
