No steam for wine referendum, election officials say

JACKSON, Tenn.-Jackson voters may soon be asked to sign a petition to allow wine sales in city grocery and convenience stores. On July 1, liquor stores can begin selling low gravity beer, which is the only alcoholic option convenient stores can offer. Unless voters petition to legalize wine sales in grocery and convenience stores through a November referendum. Madison County Election Commission staff say no one has picked up a petition yet. “No petitions have been filed in our office,” said Kim Buckley, with the Madison County Elections Office. In order for the referendum to appear on ballots, 1,682 signatures by Jackson city voters are needed by August 21. A job Buckley said may not be as daunting as it seems.”For example if one grocery store chain got ‘x’ amount of signatures and then this grocery store got their own, we would combine those signatures and they would all count.”
