JACKSON, Tenn. — Enjoying a burger off the grill may not be as common for some families this Fourth of July, thanks to an increase in beef prices. According to reports from the Bureau of Labor statistics, prices for ground beef are 16 percent higher than this time last year. It’s a change that some local shoppers have noticed. “Our beef cook-off is going to be short this time,” Jackson resident, Melvin Rhea said. Manager at Miller’s Big Star in Henderson, said they noticed prices beginning to rise significantly within the last six weeks. According to reports, the spike is due to a decline in the country’s cattle herd. “Certain people on tight budgets or fixed incomes…it’s affecting their beef eating,” Nick Mills, a store manager at the grocery store said. “If it doesn’t change it could really affect our business.” For shoppers like Rhea, he said the high price of beef is already causing him and his family to grill on a budget this Fourth of July.
