UPDATE: Person of interest in Jackson homicide surrenders to officers

JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson police tell WBBJ they have located the person of interest, Clayton Nelson, in Saturday’s homicide. Officers say Nelson was found along with the victim’s missing SUV in Nashville. Investigators maintained phone contact with Clayton Nelson and convinced him to surrender. The investigator arranged for Nelson to turn himself in to a Metro Nashville police detective around 10 a.m. Sunday. When Clayton Nelson surrendered, he was in Jeffrey Nelson’s black 2001 Infiniti QX4 SUV. The SUV has been towed to the TBI Crime Lab in Nashville for a forensic examination. Jackson investigators traveled to Nashville and brought Nelson back to Jackson for questioning. The investigation is ongoing. Around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, officers were called to a duplex at 809 Westwood Ave. to check on the welfare of Jeffrey Nelson after a family member became concerned. Officers arrived to find the side door ajar. There was no sign of a forced entry. Officers checked inside and found Nelson dead. He was the victim of an apparent homicide. Investigators determined that Jeffrey Nelson’s SUV was missing. Jeffrey Nelson’s son, Clayton Nelson, was developed as a person of interest. Some neighbors tell WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that Clayton and his father seemed to be close. One neighbor, who chose not to be identified, says she used to see both men often. “When I heard that his son was a person of interest that really threw me. I can’t imagine, just can’t imagine anybody going to that length,” she said, ” when I heard that had happened I could not believe it. I know it happens all over town but when it happens next door that really shocks you.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department’s Major Crimes Bureau at 731-425-8400 or Crime Stoppers at 731-424-8477 (TIPS).
