Memphis finalist for HUD neighborhood improvement grant
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen says Memphis is one of nine finalists for a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods by improving housing.
In a statement released Tuesday, Cohen said the city is competing for a HUD Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant worth up to $30 million.
The Choice Neighborhoods program seeks to transform poor neighborhoods into viable mixed-income neighborhoods by revitalizing severely distressed public and assisted housing. The grant would help the city invest in well-functioning services, effective schools and education programs, public assets, public transportation and improved access to jobs.
Cohen, D-Memphis, says the grant could “substantially transform our city.”
