JACKSON, Tenn. — Hundreds of thousands of Americans are joining together across the nation with just the flip of a switch and the strike of a match. It all started on Facebook. The Lights on for Chattanooga vigil is simple. Just turn on your porch light or light some candles to show support for the five servicemen who lost their lives in the Chattanooga shootings. “If we all come together as one, then there is not a whole lot that can divide us,” Jackson resident Tracey Thompson said. “I heard about the Lights on for Chattanooga from Facebook, and I thought it was a great idea I would like to be involved in.” Thompson said she invited everyone she knows to participate in the nationwide event. “Lights on for Chattanooga is about people coming together as a whole and show solidarity and support for all of our fallen servicemen,” Thompson said. But for many of these vigil participants, they believe with just the flip of the switch the country can stand more united. “[It] allows others to see that we are supportive of the ones that help us have freedom,” vigil participant Kim Hardin said. For Hardin, keeping their lights on has a deeper message. “I think it goes along with that Bible verse that we should be a light to a dark world,” Hardin said. The vigil started at midnight on the 26th and will continue until the last serviceman slain in Chattanooga is laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon.
