MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — A letter sent to every county clerk in the state is causing a bit of controversy. State Rep. Rick Womick from Rutherford County sent the letter to each county clerk’s office asking them to stop issuing same-sex marriage licenses and ignore the supreme court ruling. Madison County’s clerk said the letter does not change anything here. “The United States Supreme Court is the ultimate authority, and they say same-sex marriages are legal in the state of Tennessee, so that’s what I’m going to do is issue licenses for same-sex couples,” Madison County Clerk Fred Birmingham said. Birmingham said since the Supreme Court ruling, 10 same-sex couples have applied for licenses in Madison County with seven of them being returned to form a civil union.
