Selmer Alderman Involved in Altercation with Ex-Wife’s Husband

Authorities said Selmer Alderman John Smith found himself in an altercation with his ex-wife’s husband when he went to pick up his children on Tuesday, January 31. “The offender stated that he (Alderman Smith) was disrespectful to his (Holcombe’s) ex-wife, the offender’s wife,” said Investigator Brad Johnson with the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department. He said although it was not the alderman’s week to have the children, he said the two share custody and had a mutual agreement Smith would pick them up on his birthday. Investigator Johnson said when the alderman and a friend arrived, the ex-husband, Eric Holcombe, 36, of Guys, approached Smith’s vehicle and an altercation occurred. “The victim says a kick to the head. The offender says he remembers hitting him in the head,” said Investigator Johnson. He said the accounts vary in that Smith claims Holcombe grabbed him by the hair, dragged him out of the car and kicked him in the head. Investigator Johnson said a deputy met Smith at his home in Selmer to take a report where the deputy said Smith told her he was headed to an area hospital for treatment. Investigator Johnson said Smith received staples to his head for his injury, but was later released. “They need to grow up and the step-father I don’t think had any business in stepping in there, unless that child was in danger. That man has a right to see his children,” said Pam Clark, a Selmer resident. Officers have charged Holcombe with aggravated assault. Investigator Johnson said Holcombe works as a truancy officer for McNairy County Schools. He said Holcombe is still employed by the system pending the outcome of this investigation and to his knowledge is not on administrative leave. Holcombe is free on a $1,000 bond and is due in court March 1.
