Hundreds of West Tennesseans gathered in downtown Jackson, Thursday evening, to fight heart disease. 7 Eyewitness News’ own Tom Britt even strutted the catwalk as part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women celebration, while Keli McAlister served as emcee. The event annual event at the Carl Perkins Civic Center is not only a fundraiser for the organization, but a way to remind West Tennessee that heart disease is the number one killer of women. In fact, a woman dies every minute from heart disease. “Heart disease kills one in three women, compared to breast cancer which kills one in every eight women,” said Nancy Phillips, Chairperson. “The numbers speak for themselves. We want to draw attention to that to save women’s lives.” The guest speaker was Collins Tuohy, whose family was portrayed in the movie “The Blindside.” The American Heart Association estimates it raised more than $10,000 during the event.
