Murder Suspect Appears at Preliminary Hearing

7 Eyewitness News has learned more about what happened the night a Jackson man allegedly beat his sister’s boyfriend to death with a hammer. Reuben Fairfield, 26, appeared for his preliminary hearing in Jackson City Court on charges of first degree murder and tampering with evidence. An investigators read a statement Fairfield gave them shortly after the murder in which he said he admitted responsibility. A fireind of Fairfield, who said he was with him the night of February 7, testified he both saw and heard Fairfield repeatedly strike Lionel Harris with a hammer. “I just heard Lionel like holler real loud and then once I turned around he was like, I just seen his head going down and his eyes were like wide open and I seen like the hammer in Reuben’s hand,” said William Bond, an eyewitness. “But I was, I was still getting up you know, Reuben hit him with the second blow.” After the testimony, which also included a medical examiner the judge sent the case on to a grand jury. Fairfield is currently jailed without bond.
