The Tennessee Highway Patrol has unveiled one of its newest tools in its efforts to keep the state’s highways safe. Troopers said their new Mobile Inspection Station can roll to any location and set up to inspect 18 wheelers and the freight it’s transporting. It is also equipped with a set of portable scales to check the weight of big rigs and even an infrared imaging system to check things such as tires and brakes. “It’s safer for everyone, the less time we spend on the side of the road, checking that truck, the safer we are,” said Lt Brad Wilbanks of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. “The less time the driver sits on the side of the road, the safer he is. The less time we all spend on the side of the road, the safer the motoring public is. So, it is all around win/win situation. It is just about making the roadways in Tennessee safer. We want to get out into the rural counties you know the Hardin Counties, the Weakley Counties where trucks run and maybe operating unsafely. We want to get a hold of those people and get them in compliance of the law.” The unit can also be used as a command post during natural disasters. It was purchased through federal funding and will be used all across the state.
