A Union City man said he and his dog were attacked by a pit bull, and wanted the city to take action. According to the mayor, Union City does have a leash law and vicious dog ordinance, but the victim said that was not enough, he wants the breed of dogs banned from the city. Claud Billingsley said he never would have guessed that not grooming his dog, would save his dog’s life. “If I’d gotten my dog shaved like he was supposed to be, he would of killed my dog,” said Billingsley. While he was walking his dog on Union City’s newest walking trail, Billingsley said a pit bull attacked him and his labradoodle, Charlie. “Looked like a raging bull. I said, ma’am, I don’t think that dog’s coming over here to play, that dog’s coming over here to attack my dog,” stated Billingsley. Billingsley claimed the pit bull went straight for his dog’s neck, knocking him down along the way. “He couldn’t get a hold of my dog, the skin of the dog. He grabbed my dog and hair flying everywhere, couldn’t get the skin, the vital part,” said Billingsley. The owner of the pit bull came to the rescue, according to Billingsley, hitting the dog until he was under control. Billingsley wanted the city to take action, by banning pit bulls from the walking trail. “It’s very difficult to select a breed and just pinpoint one breed from existing in town, because there’s other breeds that are vicious,” said Union City Mayor Terry Hailey. The mayor added the city did have a couple of ordinances that should take care of the problem, but they must be enforced. “Anyone with a dog outside is supposed to be on a leash, and the other thing is we have a vicious dog ordinance. Any vicious dog is a violation, so between those two things, it should take care of anything that happens like that,” stated Mayor Hailey.
