Hardin Co. School Board Meets after Director Indicted

A decision was made Thursday night to suspend the Hardin County director of schools, eventually. The Hardin County School Board held a specially called meeting where they voted 6 to 4 to suspend Director of Schools John Thomas. He was indicted earlier this week on a charge of bringing a gun onto the campus of Hardin County Middle School last November. His suspension with pay will continue until the case is resolved. However, the suspension will not take effect until after the board finds an interim director. Five members of the board now make up a special committee that will look for the interim director. One of the board members argued they had no choice but to suspend Thomas. “As we look at other potential situations, whether it be a teacher, a principal or a student that would come and would do the same thing, would bring a firearm or some weapon on campus, how can we judge on those matters when we have our chief officer that obviously is doing what appears to be very contrary to that law,” said David Baker, a Hardin County School Board member. The board has scheduled another special meeting for next Thursday to discuss the search for an interim director.
