Hunting For A Cure

The 8th annual “Hunting For A Cure” kicked off Saturday. It allowed young hunters from all over the country to enjoy turkey hunting in West Tennessee. More importantly, they gave 100 percent of their proceeds to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. For some young hunters, it was a reminder of what they have overcome. Aaron Bell began participating in “Hunting For A Cure” five years ago with his dad. “Here to help support St. Jude, and raise money,” said Aaron’s father, Chris Bell. But what Aaron did not expect, was to be one of those St. Jude kids himself one day. “In 2007, he hunted as a healthy kid, and in the fall of 2007 he was diagnosed with cancer,” said Bell. Aaron was back this year, cancer free. “We take kids on a two-mile turkey hunt, and raise money for St. Jude,” added Mike Davison. Youth hunters were accompanied by an adult and a guide to turkey hunt Saturday and Sunday. Hunters were asked to raise a $200 donation to hunt in the event, but Davison said most kids exceeded the limit. They have raised more than $426,000 in the past seven years for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “That’s one thing I think sets this organization apart from any other one I know of, 100 percent, everybody volunteers their time,” stated Davison. “It’s essential for the hospital. They have a daily operating expense of $1.7 million, so it’s up to private donations to help,” added Bell.
