Was it strike three for Sportsplex? “A lot of people love their kids and want to have a place to play,” said Sportsplex Chairman Michael Mansfield. The County Commission voted 13 to 10 against a proposed $20 wheel tax increase that would help fund the project. The baseball, softball and soccer fields would have been built next to Maury City Elementary School. “Any time you take into consideration a project of this size and this magnitude funding is always a first priority and a wheel tax increase the commission felt this was not the best way to fund it,” said Crockett County Mayor Gary Reasons. Sportsplex supporters told 7 Eyewitness News they are down but certainly not out. Sportsplex Chairman Michael Mansfield spent the past 18 months working on the project. “It’s safe to say one of these days I am sure it will come back up. There is a lot of support in the community,” Mansfield said. For now there will be no Sportsplex or wheel tax increase in Crockett County. “Decisions like this are always difficult to make for county commissioners especially when you have children involved,” Mayor Reasons said.
