Christie Russell knows all too well what it feels like when you almost hit a car driving while distracted. “In my case I’m a mother and I looked down and my daughter had texted me. I just looked up for a split second and there was a car and we were about to meet,” said Russell. She says the decision to look down at her cell phone that day changed the way she drives. Now, she keeps her phone zipped up in her purse. “I think it’s very distracting to drive with your phone in any area of the vehicle where it could be a distraction because when the screen lights up you can’t help but notice who it is,” said Russell. Jackson Police Traffic Division says it’s hard to tell when someone is texting and driving, but they are still looking for offenders. “It is really difficult to enforce the no texting and driving law the only way you can effectively enforce it is to literally witness someone sending a text,” said Lt. Ronald Adams. Russell says now that someone has been punished it should send a clear message to every driver. “I think overall as a society it will open up a lot of people’s minds to the fact that it is such a distraction and something actually happened that’s it feasible that they can see. This could happen if I choose to text and drive,” said Christie Russell.
