Haywood Deputy Cleared in Shooting
A Tipton County grand jury has cleared Haywood County Chief Deputy Mike Smothers of any charges in connection with the fatal shooting death of Chastain Montgomery, Junior in Mason last month. District Attorney General Mike Dunavant said after a thorough review and consideration of all of the facts and circumstances of the February 14 incident, a grand jury agreed that the use of deadly force by Chief Deputy Smothers was justified, proper and necessary. Dunavant adds Chief Deputy Smothers bravery, under fire, prevented any further injury or death of innocent people by stopping the threat posed by Montgomery Junior at the time.
