After four years of litigation, the city of Selmer approved a $500,000 settlement to be paid to the family of the victims injured and killed while at a 2007 burn-out exhibition benefit. “I knew several of them. One of them was a really good friend of mine,” said Selmer resident, Candy Nixon. Selmer Mayor David Robinson said the money will come from the city’s general fund account, which means the taxpayer will pick up the expense. Mayor Robinson said although it is a substantial amount, the city has the money and will manage. “As you know there were approximately 18 or 19 lawsuits filed against the town and its representatives,” said Terry Abernathy, the city attorney. Abernathy said the city council , mayor and some city employees were named in the lawsuit. He said the settlement will clear all pending lawsuits against the city and it representatives. He said to his knowledge, settlements have been reached with the families between the company which leased the car and driver and Hoosier Tire Company with one outstanding lawsuit in appeal against the muffler company, Flowmaster. “I’m just glad it’s over. It’s been a long drawn-out thing and I’m really glad for closure for everyone,” said Selmer resident, Carolyn Dancer.
