The West Tennessee Career Center is seeing a lot more claimants now that there is a law requiring people who receive unemployment benefits go out and look for work. Claimants are required to prove they are actively searching for work in order for them to get their benefits. When asked how many people she sees in a week, Interview Specialist, Dorothy Chamberlain said can not remember them all. Especially since the State of Tennessee implemented a new law requiring people who receive unemployment benefits to go on job interviews to continue receiving benefits. “The most claimants that we have come in are normally from 9 to 11 Tuesday through Thursdays,” said Dorothy Chamberlain. REA, The Re-employment Act, is a part of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012. Because of the new act, claimants have to prove they went on two interviews a week. At the end of the month they are required to turn in the form. Kristen Parnell has been looking for a new job for a couple of weeks and says she is desperate to find a job. “Anything to help you get money basically, have an income,” said Kristen Parnell. Chamberlain said the people she normally helps will take any job. “Pretty much desperately seeking anything. There a lot of them they come in with degrees still are not getting hired anywhere,” said Chamberlain. “It’s kinda scary ’cause…not being able to pay for your bills or anything is like, wow what am I going to do,” said Parnell.
