Businesses Join Gang Prevention Program
Jackson’s Gang Prevention Task Force were joined by businesses in their continuing effort to address gang acitvity among youth in the city. The task force and business leaders met Thursday to see the details of the Gang Prevention Work Experience Program, a locally-funded initiative. 25 high-risk juvenile offenders, ages 15 to 18 will go through the eight-week program with classroom and one-on-one job training and job management. Task force members said it will be more than just a jobs program. “Have positive role models that they have something positive to fill their time this summer and they learn some job skills at the same time so it’s a win-win,” said Dr. Vicki Lake of the Gang Task Force. The young people will partner with employers to provide the on-the-job training. The city council is providing $75,000 for the Summer Youth program.
