Experts Give Parents Tips On Gun Safety
After two recent accidental shootings in Tennessee, one involving a teenager and one fatally killing a 3-year-old, people are concerned about gun safety. Last week, Officials in Bradley County said a toddler was tragically shot in the face and died. According to Crockett County Investigators, a teenage girl was accidentally shot Tuesday night when a 12-gage shotgun discharged. Firearms Instructor for the Tennessee Department of Safety, John Grogan, said the most important thing parents should do is educate their children about guns. “I can do everything to protect my home and my guns from my children or maybe your children if your children come to my house, but I have no guarantee if my children come to your home. So, I need to educate my children on gun safety,” said Grogan. Grogan said hiding your guns is not a safe way to keep them away from your children. “It doesn’t matter how well you try to hide, they will find them. If you have a handgun in the home or any type of firearm, your children know it and know where they are,” said Grogan. According to Grogan, the only safe way to store a firearm is unloaded and under lock and key. Grogan also said children should be taught to respect firearms. “From personal experience, educating the children and securing the firearm is the best way. Because if you can instill in them the danger and the respect for the firearm, hopefully, if its not under lock and key, they’ll leave it alone,” said Grogan. Grogan believes anyone who has a gun should have proper knowledge of how it works and how to keep you and your family safe.
