MEDINA, Tenn. – By a vote of 3-0 the Medina Alderman passed an ordinance that will allow officers to hand out $50 tickets to violators of the noise ordinance. Medina Police Chief Chad Lowery said, “We have some bands here in Medina and they like to practice in their garage that becomes a big problem for people at ten o’clock at night trying to get some sleep.” Between 9pm and 6am if noise is plainly audible at a distance of fifty feet from another person’s home then the person responsible for the noise is in violation and could be subject to a fine. Mayor Vance Coleman said, “We want you all to be able to have your family time go to bed, your kids go to sleep at a decent hour and not be woke up too early too.” The city of 3,700 continues to grow with about 75 new homes built in the Medina area this year. Construction crews were spotted as early as 6:30 in the morning and as late as 8:30 at night according to recent complaints. Lowery said, “We have a lot of house building, house construction going on. Believe it or not we have had some concrete pads poured at midnight and finished.” Dogs that bark all night may cost the pet owner. Persistent barking by a dog or other animal sounds past nine o’clock at night is a violation of the new ordinance. “Pets that’s gonna be a hard issue but as a dog owner your gonna have to learn to control. Your neighbor doesn’t want to hear your dog barking at midnight,” said Lowery.
