Freed-Hardeman Volleyball team uses recruiting to stay successful on the court
HENDERSON, Tenn. – Following a great 2011 season at Freed-Hardeman, Todd Humphry began the process of putting together another championship volleyball team. “We started rebuilding right away having six graduating seniors and losing six starters as well,” Humphry said. His first task during the off season was to find a new group of players who could contribute right away. “You have to find kids who can make the adjustment from high school to college,” Humphry said. “Especially with a program like ours where we’ve been successful for several years and want to keep up tradition.” In all six freshmen joined the Lady Lions in 2012. Each of them came in ready to help. “It‘s been really great because we’ve come together and been able to work together and work through stuff,” Freshman Kara England said. “I would hate to be the only freshman on the team but with six it makes it easier.” The majority of the players on this year‘s team are from the US. However in years past Coach Humphry has gone overseas to bring in new talent. “I signed my first international player six or seven years ago,” Humphry said. “From that point they told their friends and they told friends and started that process.” Only two seniors are on the 2012 roster. One of them is Callie West who has played all four years at FHU. “I wasn’t sure what to expect when I came as a freshman and to come to a winning program,” West said.”I was excited to carry on a winning tradition. It‘s been really exciting to see what these new freshman will experience.”
