It could’ve ended in tragedy until help arrived at exactly the right moment. On April 15th, TBI Special Agent Ryan Shanklin was headed home when he noticed a sight forcing his instincts to kick in.

“Went to early vote, noticed a gentleman unresponsive,” said Shanklin

An elderly man was lying unresponsive on a sidewalk in Gibson County. Shanklin immediately jumped into action. With no pulse detected, he recalled his training and immediately went for his medical equipment.

“We carry a lot of advanced medical equipment including defibrillators, advanced airways,” said Shanklin.

Shanklin says it certainly came in handy. Part of his lifesaving measures included establishing an advanced airway on the patient.

“Having that defibrillator there to me is what made the biggest difference,” said Shanklin.

A bystander called 911. When EMS arrived, the elderly man was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency care. Even though he was off duty, fate placed Shanklin exactly where he needed to be.

“You’re never off duty is the way is the way I’ve always looked at it. If someone needs help, you stop and help them,” said Shanklin.

What really stood out to him was the response from the community during that moment.

“I didn’t know who he was, and some of them didn’t either,” said Shanklin.

Shanklin says a crowd gathered and a local nurse assisted with CPR.

“Kind of reiterates the small town feeling and where we live, you know, rural West Tennessee, and how people react to others when they’re in need,” said Shanklin.

The next day, Shanklin received unexpected news. The stranger he helped was expected to make a full recovery. A moment that could’ve ended in heartbreak is now a reminder of how one decision can save a life.

According to the TBI, Shanklin’s quick response and life‑saving efforts underscores the ongoing value of their EMT program in protecting both TBI personnel and the public.
