Neighbor Saves Man from House Fire

HENRY COUNTY, Tenn. – A Henry County man is counting his blessings that he is alive, after a fire destroyed his home early Thursday morning while he was inside. Clarence Smith, 76, told 7 Eyewitness News he is grateful to be alive, thanks to his neighbor, who rescued him from his burning home on Sunnyside Drive while he was sleeping. Firefighters said they do not know what caused the fire, but believe it started in the garage. Smith’s neighbor and hero, Denton Jordan, told 7 Eyewitness News when he realized Smith’s house was burning, he ran over to his house, and banged on the door to wake him up. Jordan said he was very worried. The fire started to spread from Smith’s garage to his house. He is still in shock over what happened. “At the time, you don’t think anything about, you know, this is someone’s life, but it hits you later, and it’s not my stuff, but it tears you up to see someone’s entire life in their house start to melt, and there’s nothing you can do about it,” Jordan said. Smith said it was a very close call, and thanks God for looking after him. He hopes to eventually rebuild his house in the same location.
