Woman charged with squatting: No mental evaluation
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A woman accused of squatting in a vacant $3 million dollar mansion is refusing an order from a judge for a mental evaluation.
The Commercial Appeal reports (bit.ly/15IAG3Z) that Tabitha Gentry appeared in court Monday for the 12th time since April.
Gentry has been charged with aggravated burglary and theft over $60,000. Authorities say she illegally moved into the Memphis-area mansion in March. The property was for sale after being foreclosed on by a bank.
Gentry goes by the name of Abka Re Bey and says she is a sovereign citizen of the Moorish American National Republic and therefore not subject to any laws.
She has challenged the authority of the judge, who says he will not reinstate her bond until she agrees to a mental evaluation.
