Generals Outlast Biscuits with Walkoff win in 14 Innings
GENERALS NEWS RELEASE The Generals won take the opener 2-1 over Montgomery in second-longest game of 2013 JACKSON, TENN. (August 13, 2013) – It took extra innings and 4 hours and 5 minutes to settle the score in the series opener between Jackson and Montgomery, but the Generals (23-25) walked off with a 2-1 win over the Biscuits (23-28). Jackson was 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13 runners while the Biscuits were 1-for-12 in the same category. Jackson is now 16-23 in one-run games and 4-2 against Montgomery at home this season. The Generals improved to 5-9 in extra inning affairs. James Gillheeney and Victor Mateo both turned in terrific starts on Tuesday night. Mateo allowed four hits, two fewer then Gillheeney, and struck out six, two more then the left-hander. Gillheeney (ND, 5-6, 3.78) went six strong with no runs, but walked four and left two runners on base in each of the last three innings he pitched. Mateo could be described as efficient and confident. He came into the game 3-1 with a 1.84 ERA in his last six starts. Mateo rode the momentum to another good outing. The hard-throwing righty had thrown 64 pitches through six innings, and walked only one hitter all night. He made one mistake in the fifth that led to the only run he surrendered. Mateo worked his way out of a no out, bases loaded jam in the seventh and was finished after 7.2 innings. The offenses seemed to be at a standstill as the two teams struggled to get the hit in the clutch moments. Jabari Blash (1-5, HR, R, BB, 2 K) was a late addition into the Generals‘ lineup and made an impressive home debut. Blash stepped to the plate in his second home at-bat and smoked a Mateo fastball into the power alley in left-center field and over the fence for his second home run in Double-A. The right fielder has collected hits in seven of his first eight starts with Jackson. That one run lead held all the way into the eighth inning when Shawn O‘Malley led off the inning with a triple and came around to score from a two-out RBI double from Cameron Seitzer. Both bullpens labored through what seemed to be countless innings until the bottom of the 14th rolled around. John Hicks (2-5, R) singled and then went from first to third on a single from Gabriel Noriega (1-6). Chris Taylor (1-7) was the next batter and chopped a ball to the third and an error from the third basemen allowed Hicks to score the game winner. Both bullpens were fantastic in the late frames. Stephen Kohlscheen (2.48), Carson Smith (2.05) and Kyle Hunter (W, 3-0, 1.07) combined for seven innings of five-hit, shutout baseball. Kohlscheen struck out three to go along with Smith‘s four and Hunter‘s three. As a whole, Jackson pitching fanned 16 Biscuits hitters. Game two of the series will begin at 7:05 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday. The left-hander Anthony Fernandez (8-6, 3.95) will get the start for the Generals. Montgomery has not announced their starter yet.
