Suspect Arrested In Series Of Mail thefts

JACKSON, Tenn.– Jackson Police have arrested a man in connection with the series of mail and package thefts that have been occurring around town. Leonard Merriweather III, 34, has been arrested and charged with five counts of theft of property under $500. Merriweather has already been arraigned in Jackson City Court and remains in custody at the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex in lieu of $5,000 bond. Merriweather was identified earlier this year as a suspect in several mail and packages thefts that took place in North Jackson. Merriweather was spotting packages and mail that had been delivered to residences and then stealing them. In one instance, he was recorded on the homeowner‘s home surveillance system. A warrant was issued for Merriweather however he was not apprehended until last week. Beginning last week, the package thefts started again and Merriweather has been identified in several cases. Additionally investigators have located stolen mail and packages in Merriweather‘s possession and are attempting to determine the rightful owners. Investigators are also consulting with the U.S. Postal Inspectors to determine if they wish to prosecute the cases.
