Chicago Democrat’s bribery trial enters 2nd week
CHICAGO (AP) – The trial of an Illinois lawmaker accused of accepting a $7,000 bribe has entered its second week.
Monday is the third day of testimony at state Rep. Derrick Smith’s trial.
The federal jury in Chicago is expected to hear secret recordings of Smith alleging a plot to take a bribe from a day care center seeking a state grant.
In opening statements last week, the defense attacked the credibility of a campaign worker-turned-informant who wore a wire to record the Chicago Democrat. The informant is only referred to in court by his first name, Pete.
The 50-year-old Smith has pleaded not guilty to bribery. That count carries a maximum 10-year prison term.
