Residents expected to return home after flooding

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Authorities say 160 people evacuated from a Memphis neighborhood due to high water from heavy rains should be able to return on Monday.

WMC-TV (http://bit.ly/1sRgTh6) reports several residents in the Whitehaven neighborhood were evacuated and sent to the Hickory Hill Community Center to stay overnight.

Some areas of the city and Shelby County got nearly 6 inches of rain on Sunday within six hours. City officials say storm drains couldn’t handle that much water in such a short time, which led to flash flooding and evacuations.

The water also was high at the Wolf River Greenway, where both the parking lot and a trail were covered with water.

WMC reports the water has already receded in many of the flooded areas.
