The 158th Mid-South Fair set to begin Friday

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) – The kickoff of the 158th Mid-South Fair will not take place at noon on Friday as in years past.

Instead, gates for the first day of the annual event will open at 4 p.m. Friday at the Landers Center in Southaven.

The fair is entering its fifth year in Mississippi since relocating across the state line from Memphis in 2009.

After a slow start since moving to DeSoto County, Michael Doyle, president of the Mid-South Fair board of directors, tells The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1ARUGhS) fair goers seem to have now embraced the event.

Last year, attendance was up nearly 20 percent, drawing 86,332 people during its 10-day run.
