UTC to reopen Grote Hall

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga plans to reopen Grote Hall after a sinkhole formed near the building over the weekend.

University spokesman Chuck Cantrell told the Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/1HEozbC) that there’s no structural damage to the building. He says the structure was built on pillars anchored to the bedrock.

Classes at the building were canceled Monday after the sinkhole formed over the weekend.

The 30-foot-long hole remained cordoned off and Cantrell says students should avoid it until repairs are made.

He said a mixture of concrete and dirt will be used to fill the hole, though he wasn’t sure how long repairs would take or how much they would cost.
