HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — Shirley Daniels works to make learning interesting for students in Gibson County. “When I see that little light in the student’s eye that’s indicating that they have finally gotten the concept, the idea, that’s worth a million dollars to me,” Daniels said. Daniels teaches 8th grade science at Humboldt Middle School. She graduated from Lane College then went on to earn a master‘s degree from Union University. Daniels also holds a doctorate of theology degree. The 29-year teaching veteran said she initially did not want to work in the classroom. “A professor saw something in me that I’m really surprised about,” Daniels said. “He saw that I would be a great teacher, and I’m very happy that he did because I certainly enjoy what I’m doing.” Daniels said students inspire her and she hopes to inspire them. “I feel that the kids need me, and sometime I feel like I need them more than they need me,” she said. Daniels believes lessons in class can lead to lessons in life. “I want them not only just learn science,” she said. “I want them to learn about life period and take these skills with them for the rest of their life.” Daniels will be eligible for the statewide Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month Award.
