Robertson accepts redistricting plan for schools

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (AP) – The Robertson County Board of Education has approved a plan mandated by the U.S. Justice Department to desegregate its elementary schools.

The decision on Monday comes months after federal investigators determined that the Middle Tennessee school district was not desegregated.

WPLN (http://bit.ly/1ATA1Pk) reports that although some school board members had threatened to vote no, they approved the settlement without discussion. Afterward, they called the redistricting “tolerable.”

Federal authorities notified administrators in early September that federal investigators had finished their review of the district’s schools and found them to be in non-compliance. The Justice Department said in a letter that seven “almost all-white schools” had been built since 1970 and were under capacity while portable units have been used to alleviate overcrowding in schools with high minority populations.
