Austin Peay AD van der Merwe stepping down
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Austin Peay athletic director Derek van der Merwe is stepping down from that post to become the school’s vice president for advancement, communication and strategic initiatives.
The school announced Friday that van der Merwe begins his new job April 1 and would continue overseeing the athletic department until a new athletic director is appointed. Cheryl Holt will serve as interim athletic director during the search process.
During van der Merwe’s 18-month stint as athletic director, Austin Peay opened its new $20 million football stadium last fall. Before arriving at Austin Peay, van der Merwe was Central Michigan’s deputy athletic director and chief operating officer.
This announcement comes as Austin Peay searches for a new women’s basketball coach. The school announced Monday that it was firing Carrie Daniels after nine seasons.
