Law enforcement officials discuss officer-involved shootings

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. (AP) – Representatives of state-level law enforcement agencies from nine southeastern states held a meeting just outside Atlanta this week to discuss best practices when investigating officer-involved shootings.

Statewide law enforcement agencies are often called in by local law enforcement to investigate officer-involved shootings. The public has increasingly called for such outside investigations in the wake of a string of high-profile officer-involved shootings.

Participants at the meeting said transparency and clear communication have become increasingly important to reinforce and rebuild public trust.

Statewide law enforcement agencies from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee were represented at the meeting.

The findings from the meeting, which wrapped up Wednesday, will be presented at a national meeting of the Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies.
