UNION CITY, Tenn. – Union City’s football team has a simple goal. In fact, it can be summed up in two words. “Another championship,” senior Deccarrious Stevens said. The Golden Tornadoes know what it takes to get to there. They’ve been crowned state champions the last two seasons. “Last year we had a motto. It was take care of business. The first year we had motto — no excuses,” Stevens said. “Now it’s keep the bullseye on your back.” The added pressure is being embraced by the entire locker room. “We gotta target on our back,” linebacker Jamison Blackwell said. “Everybody wants to beat us. Beat the streak.” That streak is 27 wins. The Golden Tornadoes last loss was two years ago in Week 0. “Winning streak or whatever, that’s not the important thing,” head coach Darren Bowling said. “It’s going out there and giving your best. Playing as hard as you can.” That’s not the only thing Bowling wants to accomplish. “I never heard of a single-a team going all the way to Pennsylvania,” Blackwell smiled. But the purple and gold are doing it . Union City plays Delone Catholic in Week five. Bowling attempted to schedule competition in the state, but was unable to find an opponent. “Let’s do an educational trip for these guys,” Bowling explained. “Some of these guys never get away. Never get out of Union City.” The defending Class 1A Champions are excited about their trip. Because that means the season will be in full swing. “Everybody is eager to get started. Put pads on and starting hitting people,” Bowling said. Union City kicks off the season at home against South Fulton.
