TROY, Tenn. — Multiple cases of late-night vandalism in one West Tennessee city forces the police chief to reinforce the city’s curfew laws. Troy’s citywide curfew is nothing new. For those under 18, the curfew is 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. “We just try to make people aware that there is a curfew, and if you’re out after 10 o’clock at night the police department here is going to stop you and check you, and if you’re under 18, then they’re going to send you home,” Troy Police Chief John Gardner said. On a first offense, the children are sent home. On a second offense, the parents are notified and asked to come pick up their children. The chief wanted to put out a reminder of the curfew because of the amount of money the city has spent on renovating the parks. “Probably seven out of the 14 vandalisms were in our parks,” Gardner said. Those were just last month. Spenser Maloney has lived in Troy his whole life and said he never knew about the ordinance until now. “I think it’s fine, but I don’t think that they’re going to be real hard on kids as long as they just behave like they’re supposed to,” Maloney said. Gardner said there is no reason for kids to be out in Troy so late at night. “There is absolutely nothing in Troy that’s open,” Gardner said. “Everything is closed, and there’s nothing for them to do.” “These kids don’t need to be out past 11 o’clock,” Maloney said. “There is nothing good for them to do out past 11 o’clock, roaming out here at night.”
