SELMER, Tenn. – Kylin Wynn is a name McNairy Central football fans should get used to hearing. The former cornerback turned running back ran for 247 rushing yards and three touchdowns in Week 1 against Scotts Hill. On the defensive side as safety, the sophomore returned a 60-yard interception for a touchdown (and nearly had another pick six according to his coach). The only reason Wynn didn’t start in the backfield as a freshman last season is to keep him from getting first-year jitters. “The label that was put on him as soon as he came up here coming out of eight grade is this is one of the big future guys on our team,” head coach Chad Hodge said. “This year he’ll have the opportunity to touch the ball a lot on offense, and it paid off the first game.” Wynn surprised himself after collecting 400 total yards. “It was overwhelming a little bit. I didn’t realize I had that many yards,” Wynn said. “Gotta credit the players that blocked for me and coaches that scouted.” Hodge wasn’t surprised to see Wynn shred the defense on offense. It was the sophomore’s defensive skills that caught him off guard. “He played corner all last year. That’s a different position than safety,” Hodge said. “I know it’s a defensive back but it’s totally different.” Wynn is hoping to have more performances like Week 1. He’s still getting adjusted to his new title. “It’s a little nervous,” Wynn said about being one of the leaders of the team. “Just listen to the coaches; they know what you’re doing. We can win some games this year.” Player of the Week nominations can be emailed to jwalters@wbbjtv.com.
