Elk bugling season about to begin at Land Between The Lakes
GOLDEN POND, Ky. (AP) – Peak elk bugling season is about to begin, and Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area’s Elk and Bison Prairie offers an opportunity to hear the sound.
The attraction is open seven days a week, from dawn to dusk, and features a 3.5-mile paved loop with interpretive stops. Passes cost $5 per vehicle.
Range and Wildlife Technician Curtis Fowler says peak bugling season is usually mid-September to Mid-October, with late afternoon the best chance to hear bugling and see elk calves. The park advises observing rules and remaining inside the vehicle when the animals are nearby.
Biologists introduced elk into the 700-acre prairie in February 1996. About 55 elk and 59 bison live in the prairie.
Land Between The Lakes manages more than 170,000 acres in western Kentucky and Tennessee.
