Kentucky Derby style event returns to Madison Downs
JACKSON, Tenn.—A community organizer in Madison county says he created a Kentucky Derby-themed event.
The event was hosted at Madison Downs to celebrate the race’s history including early trailblazers like the first derby winner Oliver Lewis in 1875, prominent African American jockeys, and pioneering female jockey Cheryl white.

He says the tradition is about more than the race.
“The derby is a big thing with dressing up. The hats. Definitely got to have the Bourbon and the cigars. It is just a great event. I have a good team that worked with me. We believe in giving back to the community, and that is why I wanted to get this going here at Madison Downs. It was a great spot for this type of event,” said Darrell Young, Promoter.
He added that the first derby event was in his yard and this is the second time the event was held at Madison Downs.
