Authorities rescue man who fell about 40 feet from cliff

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) – A man has been rescued after authorities say he fell several feet from a cliff on Signal Mountain.

Hamilton County Emergency Services spokeswoman Amy Maxwell tells media outlets that the 18-year-old man was hiking with friends on Sunday when he slipped and fell about 40 feet near Rainbow Falls.

Rescue teams consisting of more than 50 people helped retrieve the man after more than four hours. Maxwell says rescuers had difficulty getting to the man due to loose rocks and trees in the area.

Maxwell says the man was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. Authorities have not released his identity.
