Great Smoky Mountains National Park offering teacher program
GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) – Great Smoky Mountains National Park has a workshop planned this week for elementary school teachers.
The park says rangers and volunteers will use the park’s natural and cultural resources to enhance the classroom experience through activities related to the state’s new assessments, called TNReady.
Activities during the workshop include exploring the park with a “living” map, visiting the Noah “Bud” Ogle cabin to learn about Appalachian medicinal plants, conducting a forest biodiversity inventory and learning how to use a crosscut saw.
The workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT Saturday in the Gatlinburg, Tennessee, area of the park. Register by Thursday by contacting Lloyd Luketin at Lloyd_Luketinnps.gov or (865) 436-1292. Teachers who attend will receive lunch, educational materials and a $25 gas stipend.
