CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — Latoya Henning teaches second grade at Maury City Elementary. “The little people are awesome,” she said. “I love the little ones.” Henning graduated from UT Martin and earned a master‘s degree from Tennessee State University. She started teaching nine years ago and said she loves to see students learn. “To see them actually get it and understand it is an awesome thing, to see the light bulbs in their little eyes go off,” she said. Henning admits teaching can be difficult and sometimes requires her to take on different roles. “I don’t know in the mornings when I come in if I’m going to have to be mom, if I’m going to have to be a counselor, if I’m going to have to fix a boo boo that they got when they left me but nobody cared to do anything about it,” she said. She says her favorite thing about teaching is the questions. “They are so serious,” Henning said. “Their little thought process and their minds when they’re asking us questions, they are so sincere about it.” Henning has a passion for students and said she could not see herself doing anything else. Henning will now be eligible for the statewide Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award. To vote for her or any of the other nominees, go to seehowitaddsup.com.
