Students watch as Tennessee Supreme Court hears arguments
LEBANON, Tenn. (AP) – More than a thousand high school and college students have expanded their educations with a visit from the Tennessee Supreme Court.
The high court heard oral arguments in front of students from Middle Tennessee at Cumberland University in Lebanon as part of a program known as SCALES – Supreme Court Advancing Legal Education for Students.
The Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts says before the event last Wednesday, students learned about the cases in class with the help of local lawyers and judges. In addition to hearing the oral arguments, the students had a chance to ask questions of the lawyers presenting the cases.
SCALES is celebrating its 20th year. The Administrative Office of the Court says tens of thousands of students have been helped to gain a greater understanding of the legal system.
