2 women shot to death in or near Mississippi capital city

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Missouri businesswoman and a woman who recently moved to Mississippi from New York have been killed in separate shootings around Mississippi’s capital.

Fifty-eight-year-old Suzanne Hogan was shot in the head outside a Jackson convenience store Thursday.

Forty-nine-year-old Kristy Mitchell of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, was shot in the abdomen a short time later as she walked from a Ridgeland hotel to a nearby restaurant.

Jackson police said in a statement Friday that they don’t believe there is any connection between the two victims.

Jail records show that 22-year-old Zehulum Lael James of Jackson was charged with one count of murder in Hogan’s slaying, and is being held at the Hinds County jail. Jail records don’t indicate if James has an attorney.

Mitchell’s shooting remains under investigation.
