Folks in west Tennessee are making their list and checking it twice. Many shoppers are taking advantage of tax-free, back to school shopping.

Tax free shopper, Rosaliane Richards said “Oh I’ve been looking at coupons sales papers it feels great to save a dollar and to get everything that they need to get them prepared and get them ready for school come Monday.”

Rosaliane’s son, Jaieden had a list of things to get before he starts 6th grade.

“Pens, pencils, highlighters, coloring pencils, pocket folders for each subject, loose leaf paper, glue sticks and ear buds.” Jaieden said.

Shoppers can save big time during tax-free weekend. The Tennessee Department of Revenue said you do not have to pay sales tax on any clothing, school, or art supplies with a price tag of $100 or less, and computers and electronic accessories for $1,500 or less. With a tax rate in Jackson of 9.75%, you are saving almost 10 percent.

Another shopper, Pamela Blaylock said, “It definitely helps because she’s able to get the things that she wants, more of what she wants so it’s a lot better than paying full price.”

Although you can shop tax free through Sunday some people said they wanted to start as early as possible.

“Beat the crowd. That’s the number one thing to beat the crowd because I know it’s going to get kind of chaotic later on throughout the day.” Rosaliane said.

You can shop tax-free in store and online until 11:59, Sunday night.
