‘The Black Farm Experience’ opens at West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center
BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville opens a new exhibition, “The Black Farm Experience,” which features the history of Black farmers, talks and stories from Black farmers about their experiences and struggles in the farming industry.
The exhibit, which opened to the public Thursday afternoon, explores the rich history of Black farmers in the region, highlighting their significant contributions and accomplishments.
“The Black Farm Experience” traces the journey of African American farmers from the era of slavery through sharecropping and into land ownership, showcasing the immense challenges they faced and their enduring connection to the land.
The exhibit aims to portray the trials, truths, and triumphs of black individuals in the agriculture industry.
“I think the importance of this is because the framing history started with enslavement and it has continued out of a love for the agriculture and the meaning and culture, or the connection behind it,” said Karoline Hobock, assistant curator.
“The Black Farm Experience” will be on display at the Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville through April 30.
