Crews make road preparations for winter storm

JACKSON, Tenn. — As winter weather begins moving through West Tennessee, it’s advised motorists minimize or avoid traveling in the event of snow accumulation.

Monday, crews with the Tennessee Department of Transportation began pre-treating state routes and interstates in preparation for winter weather moving through West Tennessee this week.

“That helps produce a boundary between the roadways and any kind of wintery precipitation that does fall of the ground,” said Nichole Lawerence, TDOT communications officer for region four.

Multiple inches of snow is predicted, as well as sleet in some areas.

“Bridges and overpasses always freeze first. So, we make sure that those are covered as well as well as the rest of the almost 10 thousand lane miles that we take care of,” said Lawerence.

A winter storm warning is in effect for most parts of the area, including Carroll, Chester, Crockett, Dyer, Madison, Obion and Weakley counties.

In a statement from the City of Jackson’s Public Works Director, Austin Clark says crews are working to ensure roads remain safe and accessible.

“Our crews have been actively monitoring conditions and intend on deploying snowplows and salt trucks to clear high-traffic areas, emergency routes, and key intersections throughout the city.”

AAA reminds travelers, if you must be on the road, check the weather before heading out and change plans accordingly.

“If you do have to drive in inclement weather, we want you to have at least a half tank of gas, significantly reduce your speed and stay off of closed roadways,” said Megan Cooper, AAA spokesperson.

And remember, don’t crowd the plow. If you see a snow plow, move over and slow down. You can also call 5-1-1 for current road and travel conditions.

It’s also recommended to have a well-stocked emergency kit with a cell phone car charger, extra blankets, hats, gloves and coats to be safe until first responders can get to you if you’re stranded.
