Principal crowned prom king for tackling gunman in high school’s lobby

PAULS VALLEY, Okla. (CNN) – An Oklahoma high school principal who tackled and disarmed a gunman in the lobby of the school is now being honored as prom king.

Kirk Moore, the principal of Pauls Valley High School, was celebrated as a hero Friday night and given the title of prom king. Video of the moment shows students cheering and giving Moore high fives as he steps forward to receive his crown.

Moore was honored for the bravery he showed April 7 when he tackled and disarmed a gunman in the school’s lobby. He was shot in the leg during the confrontation, but no students were injured.

“The actions of the staff and the principal stepping in as soon as they saw a subject with a firearm saved lives,” Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesman Hunter McKee said following the incident.

The gunman was identified as 20-year-old Victor Hawkins, a former Pauls Valley student, according to KSWO. His charges include feloniously pointing a firearm, shooting with intent to kill and carrying a weapon to a public assembly.

Hawkins is scheduled to appear in court on May 8.
